FAQ

Old vs new tax regime questions

Which regime is the default?

The new tax regime is the default. You can still opt for the old regime when you file, subject to the rules for business income.

Does standard deduction apply automatically?

Yes in this tool, if you tick salaried / pensioner: ₹75,000 in the new regime and ₹50,000 in the old regime for FY 2026–27.

Is surcharge included?

Yes, at the statutory bands above ₹50 lakh. Full marginal relief at each surcharge threshold is simplified — high-income cases should be reviewed by us.

Can I claim HRA in the new regime?

No. HRA exemption is an old-regime benefit. Use the HRA calculator, then enter the exempt amount in the old-regime box here.

Are these official numbers?

They follow published FY 2026–27 slabs and rebates. This is an estimate for guidance only.
